Perfumery Must Remain Rare
By necessity: the ultra-confidential streams of natural raw materials we use define our limits. ‘Cuir des Abysses’ is a perfect illustration of this philosophy.
The story begins, quite unexpectedly, with chance. The founder of our in House-Lab – expert in sourcing natural materials – discovered the story of ‘Russian leather’. This accidental resurrection (an absolutely novel-worthy tale!) was found through a short feature in a fashion journal that discussed the rarest leathers.
Fascinated, he decided to investigate. His research eventually led him to a single destination. It was an artisanal tannery that had succeeded in reviving the legendary ‘Russian’ tanning technique.
Securing access to a small quantity of this tanned leather (never sold in its raw state) was a true battle..
In our hands, our team embark on a challenge never before attempted. They aimed to extract, capture, and concentrate the mythical scent of this leather. A true first in perfumery.

The Secret Cache of Russian Leather
After the Russian Revolution, the knowledge of this ancient art was thought lost forever. The discovery of a shipwrecked cache of perfectly preserved hides from the 18th century changed everything. It helped dedicated artisans reconstruct the old techniques and begin producing this treasured leather yet again.
Now, for the first time, those artisans agreed to collaborate with Les Indemodables. They have used groundbreaking ultrasonic technology to extract the true fragrance essence of Russian Leather. This includes woody tones of cork shavings, animalic notes of rawhide, and smoky whispers of birch tar. Spicy warmth wrapping around the senses.
Multi-faceted, alive, it stands apart from every artificial leather ever used. To frame such an ingredient required a stage of equal power. That stage was Vanille Havane. It is a perfume of rich contrasts: the gourmand roundness of vanilla, the warmth of Havana tobacco, and the spice of rum soaked fruits.
To embrace Russian Leather, the fragrance had to be rebalanced. Master perfumer Antoine Lie took on this challenge. He softened the sweetness, gave space to smoke, woods, and animalic facets. The result: a new identity where velvet and rawhide coexist.There is a tension: a duality where velvet and rawhide coexist in a singular, powerful harmony.
